Major Ongoing Project of the Ethical Society: Camp Linden

Camp Linden is an outdoor education and recreation program for inner-city children.
Help throughout the year with maintaining the camp. There are opportunities for volunteering with the children during the summer.

The Ethical Action Committee (EAC)—mission:

To offer an Ethical Humanist response to social problems,with an area of responsibility that includes community outreach programs and political involvement.

  • Joined Clean Water Action and the Community Labor Refinery Tracking Committee to collect petition signatures and to canvas door to door in a campaign to have the Sunoco refineries in Philadelphia replace the use of the deadly hydrogen fluoride gas for a safer alternative in their oil refining processes.
  • Called for member and attender letters to Congress based the alerts of the Coalition for Human Concerns on pending Congressional actions to cut social spending from the federal budget.
  • Using research conducted, and statements made by, the Union for Reform Judaism, the Unitarian Universalist Association, and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, drafted a letter to Senator Arlen Specter, Chairperson of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opposing the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.
  • Called for member and attender actions as suggested in the monthly American Ethical Union’s monthly Ethical Action Report for many actions during the past year. (Click here for a listing of ethical actions of the American Ethical Union, our national organization.)
  • In support of a Grandmothers for Peace, held a demonstration and sought petition signatures from the public to urge Philadelphia City Council to resolve to bring the troops home from Iraq.
  • Made a special collection of over $200 in support of Oxfam USA’s Fast Day, a day of fasting and giving the resultant savings to support Oxfam’s work to alleviate starvation among the poor of the world.
  • In response to a suggestion by the Pennsylvania Abolitionists United Against the Death Penalty, called for members and attenders living in Pennsylvania to write their Pennsylvania Commonwealth legislators in support of a more humane trial procedure in capital crime cases.
  • Joined in a Planned Parenthood demonstration against legislation by other states that would be similar to the anti-abortion legislation in South Dakota.
  • Conducted with the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the charter establishing the United Nations and a forum on the International Criminal Court.
